How to jump higher

I’m 5’6”, and I can dunk.

That’s it – I’m 5 foot 6 inches, and I CAN DUNK. (here’s the place I learnt)

How, why, where?

Well, before I could dunk, I lived in fear.  I lived in fear of being cut from the team.  I lived in fear of not getting a scholarship.  I lived in fear of not being as popular as I used to be.  I saw some of the other guys dunk, and I was jealous.  I practiced and practiced, but I realised the sad truth that my layup shots were never going to keep me in the team.

LEARN HOW TO DUNK…..NOW!

I mean, I’m good at 3 point shots, not great but good.  Was that enough to keep me in the team? No!

Then it happened, I got cut!  I vowed then that I would find a way to make sure that I was always in the team.  I wanted a way to virtually guarantee that every time I got near the net, I’d score.  I would never get dropped if they knew they could trust on me to almost definitely score.

That night, I sat in front of my computer and was playing around.  You know, just checking out videos.  One that I came across was of Michael Jordan (my all time hero).  I watched a few videos – I watched him dominate game after game, video after video, score point after point and dunk countless times.

I turned off my computer and lay on my bed and close my eyes. I have to get back on the team, I have to get back on the team. Then it hit me, I must have seen 30 videos of Jordan, and those 28 of him dunking. I knew this was it, I knew I had to dunk.

I knew I needed help. I knew I couldn’t dunk by myself. I had tried before, and ever since I was young I had tried to dunk, always try to jump higher than before, but never really making any progress.

I searched online and found a few programs, I need a guarantee. I needed a guarantee that I would dunk and a guarantee that I would pay nothing if I didn’t.  In short I needed a guarantee I would regain my place in the team.

I bought a system on how to jump and dunk, and read it straight away.  It was nothing short of amazing!    I didn’t sleep that night, I just read and read. The next day at school I was tired, really tired, but I felt great. I knew that if I could dunk and get back in the team. That night after school I practiced the exercises I learnt. I knew that anyone could dunk and that included me.  I practised and practised and practised.  In two weeks I’d added 4 inches to my jump, just by altering my techniques likely. Four weeks later and I could touch the rim. Two weeks after that…..I could dunk.

Now I’m back in the team and the highest points scorer. I’ve just about learned to reverse dunk, but haven’t done that in a competitive match yet. My game is much better than it has ever been, and I have a beautiful girlfriend (hey Kate, hope you’re reading this, you’re amazing).

I know when I’m in front of the net with the ball, nothings going to stop me.  I know I can nail that 2 points.  My teammates know I can nail those 2 points, and my coach knows I can nail that 2 points.

Learning to how to jump higher has improved my life in so many ways, now it’s your turn.

How to Jump Higher – how important is flexibility?

by jumphigher on October 18, 2009

Jumping is a basic skill for players and dancers. Thus, there is a must for these people to improve their skill. This write-up discusses about simple ways on how dancers and athletes enhance their jumping skill.

First, the flexibility of the body should be improved. Flexibility makes it easier for the person to make powerful jumps. So, how can a person improve his or her flexibility? Simple – stretching is just the answer. Regular stretching maintains, as well as increases the flexibility in major joints in the body that are essential for jumping – the hips, knees, and ankles.

The dorsi flexors which are responsible in reducing the angle between the leg and foot when the toes are brought closer to the shins should also be strengthened. The dorsi flexors play a major role in jumping. When there is an opposite motion such as when a player uses his or her feet to push him or herself off the ground, there should be a stabilizer to prevent limitation in the movement. This is the role of the dorsi flexors. To strengthen the dorsi flexors, a person should walk around with his or her heels. The balls of the feet should not touch the ground and this should be done until the person can feel a burning sensation.

Further, the toes are also essential to jumping higher. Thus, these should be enhanced and strengthened too. The toes add to the power of pushing of the feet as it is the last part to leave the ground when one jumps. It can give extra push and power to one’s jump. There are two simple work outs for the toes. The person may do push ups with the toes. In a standing position, he or she raises him or herself and stands on tip toe for at least 10 seconds and go back down and repeat the process. The second exercise is to curl and uncurl the toes for several times.

Lastly, the abs should be considered too. The abdomen gives power during jumping. An exercise for this is to breathe deeply sucking in the stomach, holding it for 20 seconds, and releasing.
